What are the major sins that destroy many Christians? Every person regardless of their faith is struggling with something in their lives. Whether be it lust, pornography, drugs, sex, greed, pride, gossip, and the list goes on. However, the intensity of these strangles differs from one person to another.

Some are ruled and sucked in by their flesh, while others struggle with ‘petty’ stuff/ sins. Some of these things might not be sinful but are weights that wear us down in our journey of salvation. [Hebrews 12:1-2]. For example, having an insatiable appetite for food that restrains you from fasting. This appetite has turned to be a weight/ burden that hinders you from running the race of faith.

John the Apostle of love declared in 1 John 5:16-17, that there are some sins that do not cause death. Meaning other sins cause spiritual and physical death. As we know sin leads to death.  This scripture shows clearly that all sins are not equal. The same way a judge would not sentence a convicted murderer in the same manner as a food thief. How much more will our heavenly father? If we say God judges all sins equally, are we not distorting the very character of God? Can God judge irresponsibility the same way He would judge rape? Of cause NO.

The following are the 4 sins that destroy many Christians.

1) Pride

This is one of the major sins that destroy many Christians and all people generally. It is because of pride that God cast out Lucifer from heaven. Pride gives people the false illusion that they are in control of everything and that they are self-sufficient.  This is deception at work. People become full of themselves and lose the very essence of who they truly are. Most victims of pride tend to be unteachable; they lack a teachable spirit. They are caught up to thinking they have it all.

Pride is the cause of many divorce cases, as no one is willing to submit to the other. Its result is strife and destruction. Most Christians have lost their anointing because of the same evil.

if you think you are standing firm, take heed lest you fall

1Corinthians 10:12

2) Lust

Lust is a major problem among the youths and even married people are not exempted from it. I always say, no one is immune to sexual sin, therefore, we all need to take heed.

Lust manifests itself in many ways, such as watching pornography, entertaining sexual thoughts, and having an uncontrolled inclination towards nudity or a propensity towards sex in general. It all begins from the sight, then the mind, and eventually possesses the heart. The results are fully evident as an addition to porn, masturbation, fornication, and adultery.

There are many Christians who are victims of lust, they are struggling with pornography, musterbation, and fornication. These sins have limited their effectiveness in serving God faithfully. It has also affected their normal livelihood. It defiles the holy temple of God. [1Corinthians 6:16-20].

3) Greed

I can simply define greed as an excessive desire and propensity towards something one loves or desires, that is out of control. In 1 Timothy Paul warns brethren to refrain from the love of money. Does this mean money is evil?  Of cause not, it is that desperate love and obsession with money that is a sin. It ends up becoming the root of many evils in your life.  Because of the obsession to be wealthy, you end up engaging in corrupted activities to achieve your goals.  By the end of the day, you lose the most important thing in your life, your soul.

John gave a list of the things that run the world when he was warning Christians not to love the world. [1John 2;15-16]. These things are the sins that destroy many Christians. They include: “the lust of the eye, cravings of sinful men and the pride of life.” These very things are not of God, but of the ungodly men in the world.

4) Gossip

This is the worst of all. It is the greatest sin that God hates the most. [Proverbs 6:16-19]. And the sin that has destroyed many people. Gossip has the effect of destroying relations. [Proverbs 16;28, Leviticus 19:16]. It has distorted the reputation of many people without their knowledge. The worst it does is cause division among brethren. This is the reason why it is an abomination before God, and those who practice it are doomed to destruction.

Gossip is based on rumors and not facts, most of which is a lie or a result of misinformation. It spreads like fire and cannot be put out. Then people build on the rumor to make it sound as if it is true while in actual sense it is a lie, consequently, destroying the reputation of the person or persons in question. [Proverbs 20:19]. Those who love gossip, especially women, should be cautioned. [Proverbs 18:21].

“Sin will take you further than you wanted to go. Keep you longer than you wanted to stay. And will cost way longer than you calculated, it would.”

John Courson.
